15 June 2022

A recently published report by the General Dental Council highlights the impact of COVID-19 on oral health and dentistry.

The GDC has published findings for impacts on both the public and the profession. Key findings from the research include:

  • Demand for services is increasing and that there may be a shift from NHS service provision to private.
  • 22% of people had not been able to make an appointment at some points since August 2020, and 17% had appointments postponed or cancelled.
  • The pandemic has exacerbated existing health inequalities.
  • Public perceptions of safety and confidence in dental care are similar to pre-pandemic levels.
