Free dental care for 18-25 year olds in Scotland

23 August 2021

Following the First Minister’s commitment that 18-25 year olds with care experience would be exempted from NHS dental charges, the Scottish Government has announced that this policy has been widened to apply to all 18-25 year olds.

From 24th August 2021, a patient under age 26 will be entitled to free care for any course of NHS treatment commenced on or after the 24th August. Should the patient turn 26 during their course of treatment, no charge will be made.

The BDA has criticised the timing of the announcement, which provided dentists with one working day’s notice on how the policy should be implemented.
