CDO England clarification on IPC guidance

12 May 2022

The CDO for England, Sara Hurley, has issued a statement providing clarification on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidance for dentistry.

The statement notes that the NHS Dental Standard Operating Procedure, which offered advice/guidance to dental practices on prioritisation of care and clinical capacity, was archived on 5th April 2022.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) IPC Guidance and the Dental Appendix supporting risk management in primary dental care settings remains in place. Both the IPC Guidance and Dental Appendix, including their revisions, can be accessed below.

The CDO’s update provides a summary of what these changes mean for dentistry, including a return to pre-pandemic physical distancing in primary care, inpatient and outpatient settings. However, certain COVID measures remain in place, including the use of face masks/coverings, screening requirements and risk management.
