Reviewing the dental Standard Operating Procedures in England

11 May 2021

The future of the Standard Operating Procedures for dentistry continues to be a topic of interest as national coronavirus restrictions are being lifted. The BDA is seeking an indication from the Chief Dental Officer regarding what would trigger a change, such as a reduction in the R-number, vaccination of patients and providers or broader Government policy.

The Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP), whose advice will be key to any revision of the SOPs, last week stated:

“Considering the current situation and the lack of new higher certainty evidence, the agreed positions and other conclusions within the AGP Rapid Review remain unchanged i.e. that staff and patients should continue to adhere to the precautions specified in current national guidance”.

SDCEP’s latest update to the Rapid Review noted that there was no new higher certainty evidence that changed its conclusions.
